RAD Registered Teachers are recognised as having undergone education and training to give them the skills and knowledge to teach dance.
Holding RAD Registered Teacher Status (RTS) opens the door to a world of benefits designed to elevate your teaching career to new heights and bring recognition of your skills and experience wherever you are in the world. As an RAD Registered Teacher, you can enter students for RAD exams and be included on the RAD Register of Teachers.
You can gain eligibility for RAD RTS through completing one of our undergraduate, postgraduate or RAD Award programmes. However, if you are a dance student or recent graduate studying with another provider, you may be able to gain RAD RTS by studying one of our Access Routes.
Access Route (Degree Track)
This Access Route is for dance students (or recent graduates) who are already completing an Honours dance degree with another provider, that includes modules on Dance Pedagogy and Ballet Technique as part of programme. The Access Route Degree Track requires you to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and teaching of RAD ballet syllabi, with an emphasis on effective planning, principles of progression and demonstration of ballet teaching skills through an assessed ballet class. To become eligible for RAD Registered Teacher Status, you will need to have successfully completed your degree studies as well as the Access Route (Degree Track).
The Access Route (Degree Track) can be studied alongside your degree course, and is delivered over two years, requiring 450 study hours. You will study three compulsory distance-learning modules which include Ballet Vocabulary, Ballet Technique and Ballet Pedagogy. Each module is supported by comprehensive online study materials and group discussions via a student forum. You will receive three hours tutoring time per module from your designated RAD module tutor.
Access Route (Vocational Track)
This Access Route is for vocational dance students, of any dance genre, who are in full-time training at (or have recently graduated from) an accredited vocational dance training provider. It can be studied alongside your vocational training, so that once you have successfully completed your vocational training course and Access Route (Vocational Track) you will be eligible to apply for RAD RTS.
The Access Route (Vocational Track) is delivered over two years, requiring 600 study hours. You will study four compulsory distance-learning modules which include Principles of Learning and Teaching in Dance, Ballet Vocabulary, Ballet Technique and Ballet Pedagogy. Each module is supported by comprehensive online study materials and group discussions via a student forum. You will receive three hours tutoring time per module from your designated RAD tutor.
Access Route (Degree Track)
Student Experience
The Access Route (Degree Track) is delivered over two years, requiring 450 study hours. You will study three compulsory distance-learning modules which include Ballet Vocabulary: Foundations and Progressions, Ballet Technique: Movement Analysis for Performance and Teaching and Ballet Pedagogy: Theory to Practice.
Each module is supported by comprehensive online study materials and group discussions via a student forum. You will receive three hours tutoring time per module from your designated RAD module tutor. Each module has learning outcomes which you will need to evidence to pass the module. You will receive formative feedback on your progress throughout each module by completion of study tasks, group discussion via the student forum and direct tutor feedback.
The final assessment across the three modules consists of practical as well as written work such as (but not limited to) a presentation based on your knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of ballet technique, submission of a 6-week unit of work for a chosen syllabus including a detailed lesson plan, a 45-60 minute practical lesson of selected RAD Graded, vocational Graded Syllabi or free class settings accompanied by a written critical self-evaluation of the class.
To become eligible for RAD Registered Teacher status, you will need to have successfully completed your degree studies as well as the Access Route (Degree Track).

Access Route (Degree Track)
You will need to be a current dance student (or recent graduate within two years of qualification) studying on an honours dance degree that includes Dance Pedagogy and Ballet Technique modules as part of your studies. In addition to submission of an application form, you will need to provide evidence (e.g. a programme specification or module outlines) that you have studied and been assessed in the relevant subject areas.
Access Route (Vocational Track)
You will need to be over 16 years of age and a current dance student, or recent graduate within two years of qualification, studying full-time (over 30 hours a week) at an accredited vocational dance training provider. This can be within a school that has government recognition for funding or an independent private dance school.
Language of Delivery
The language of delivery for both degree and vocational tracks is English. Although an English language test is not a condition of entry, if English is not your first language, we recommend that an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6 overall is needed to be able to successfully complete your studies.
